Cross-cultural mediation

We receive many patients and visitors in our hospital that don’t speak Dutch, French or English. Often they have a different culture than the healthcare providers. The main language in our hospital is Dutch, but because we want to provide the same high quality healthcare for everyone, the healthcare providers always try to speak the patient’s language. This is why we have a cross-cultural mediator in our hospital.

The cross-cultural mediator:

  • Interprets, provides external interpreters and/or mediates, so our patients and our doctors and nurses can easily speak with each other.
  • Answers our patients’ questions.
  • Can help with making new appointments and/or offers administrative support.

The cross-cultural mediator is present in our hospital on business days from 9 am to 5 pm, except for Wednesday, and speaks Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic and dialects from the Middle East).

For patients who speak different languages we work with interpreters via videocall.

How do you request an interpreter or mediator?

  • At least 3 business days before your appointment in the hospital.

  • When you make an appointment by telephone (02/254.64.00) or in the hospital.
    • When you request an interpreter, please also mention the language and your country of origin
  • Already made an appointment via our website?
    • Please contact the cross cultural mediator directly to request interpreter: via 02/257.55.94 or Intercultureel.bemiddelaar [at] azjanportaels.be (Intercultureel[dot]bemiddelaar[at]azjanportaels[dot]be) or WhatsApp: +32 477 34 93 23.
    • By telephone, you can speak to our cross cultural mediator in Dutch, English, French and Arabic.
    • On WhatsApp, you can text in your own language.
    • Always mention: your name and date of birth, your language and country of origin, the time of your appointment and the name of the doctor.
  • When you are hospitalized: let nurses know ASAP that you would like support of an interpreter or mediator
  • When you arrive in our emergency room, please don’t hesitate to let staff know that you would like language support or cross-cultural mediation.

Cross-cultural mediation and interpreting services in our hospital are free of cost.
