On Monday, 10 January 2022, major road works started in Stationlei. In a first phase, the Stationlei will be opened up, from Witherenstraat to the roundabout at the station. The Stationlei will be closed to traffic until the summer.

Scope of the works

A separate sewage system of four parallel pipes is being placed underground to collect and remove waste and rain water separately. This requires that the entire superstructure is demolished first. The bicycle and footpath will remain in place for a few months on the side of the even house numbers (park side).

After the sewerage works, the Stationlei will be rebuilt and the road layout will change significantly in the process. In the middle of the road, 2 separate bus lanes for public transportation will be built. On the side of the swimming pool (odd house numbers) a new sidewalk, a parking lane and one lane for car traffic will be built. After the works, motorized traffic will only be possible in the direction of the church.

Between the bus lanes and the homes on the park side, a spacious two-way bike path and a comfortable sidewalk will be built. There will be crosswalks at Witherenstraat, Leopoldstraat, Van Helmontstraat and the roundabout at the station.

Temporary traffic measures

As the Stationlei is undergoing a complete rebuild, the construction zone is not accessible to traffic. Residents cannot access the area with their cars either. A passage for emergency services will be assured.

Through traffic will follow a detour as of Monday, 10 January and will travel via Schaerbeeklei, Machelenstraat, Vilvoordeelaan, Woluwelaan and Luchthavenlaan. This route applies in both directions and is in effect until summer.

From Monday 10 January, 2022, the following local traffic measures will apply:

-The Stationlei is interrupted between Witherenstraat and the Stationsplein roundabout.

-Between Heldenplein and Witherenstraat, Stationlei is accessible to local traffic.

-The direction of travel on Witherenstraat will be reversed. You will drive from the Leuvensestraat to the Stationlei.

-Also the direction of travel on Schapulierstraat will be reversed. You will need to drive from the Leopoldstraat to the Witherenstraat.

-The Leopoldstraat and the Van Helmontstraat will become dead ends at the Stationlei.

Local shops and bars and restaurants will remain easily accessible to everyone.
